Match Report

We headed to Wisbch on a dull, cold Saturday afternoon for a 3.30pm match against Wisbech with a weather forecast of 100% rain- a few of us were not keen!

We had 12 players, missing a couple of our regulars but gaining a Liz Owen and Elizabeth Russel who have played very few matches this season. As the match began the rain stopped which was a bonus and we started strong, we had most of the play in Wisbech's half. Due to missing some of our regular mid fielders, we played 3 across the middle with Claire Piper in the middle to be able to have a free reign of the pitch, which she made full use of. We worked well as a team and were awarded around 5 short corners in the first half but unable to score, Wisbech has a fantastic Goalie playing ensuring she blocked most shots. However about 5 minutes before the end of the first half we wwere awarded another short, it was injected to Fiona Humphrey at the top of the D who slipped it across to Willow Browne who had a shot, the ball deflected off a Wisbech player and lifted above the Goalie and into the net-this took us to 1-0 at half time.

Wisbech came onto the pitch a different team second half and the play was more even and they gave our defence some work and Steph Simpson had to make a couple of saves. Following aour talk at half time regarding taking the ball around players rather than through, we had another break up the pitch and the ball ended up with Willow in the D following a pass from Julie Lewis. The Wisbech goalie came off her line and slid to the floor, Willow seized the opportunity with a 1on1 and took the ball around the goalie and slipped it into the net for a well worked goal.  Deepite further short corners and opportunties we were unable to gain further goals and the macth finished with a well deserved 2-0 win. POM was awarded to Claire Piper for her tireless effort as centre mid- and for covering every inch of the pitch!
