Match Report | It was the graveyard slot for the L4s today, who travelled to St Ives for their away game at 5pm. The afternoon was crisp and bright, and the L4s were out in great number. 16 players strong, they arrived to St Ives, confident and out for a win!! The L4s welcomed an array of players, with a number coming up from the (now disbanded) L5s. They also appreciated support from Katie Davidson and Lisa Gibbie, who, unable to play any other matches during the day, came to join their ranks. Plus a special mention to Elizabeth Russel, who made her St Neots debut, and to Mia Herbert and Eleanor Masters, who played their first matches for the L4s this season. St Neots started strong and they dominated the first half. Some hard work down the right hand side from Fiona Humphrey, Beth Jenkins and Elizabeth Russel, earned the L4s a number of chances in the D. Bridget Bickley as CF also had her fair share of the ball and Chris Deeks wasn't far away either. Some good defending from St Ives prevented St Neots from converting their well earned short corners, but the L4s continued to battle on. Charlotte Simmons, Erin Hurst and Alex Colby provided strong support in midfield, backed up by a solid defence, with Liz Owen having some great play keeping St Ives away from Steph Simpson's toes . Try as they might, St Neots could not convert their chances, and the 1st half ended, frustratingly 0-0. After a good pep talk and fuelled with water, St Neots started the second half keen and eager. However, things did not intially go their way, with Steph Simpson beaten by St Ives early on, with the opposition scoring the first goal of the match. St Neots were down and they weren't happy about it. Picking their heads up, they were not going to let this stop them and it showed. Some great balls up from defence and midfield caught our forwards in just the right position, and it was not long before St Neots levelled. It was to be Fiona Humphrey's and Julie Lewis's good fortune today. Their first goal was a cracking shot from Fiona straight past the keeper. It was followed quickly by a beautiful slip from Fiona to Julie, who planted it firmly in the back of the net. Plus they didn't stop there. Fiona swiftly managed to put another one past the goalie, assisted by Julie, before a beautifully timed pass from Chris Deeks to Julie, found the latter confidentially slotting it in goal from a very difficult angle. St Neots were beaming. As St Ives tired, St Neots benefitted from their numbers and experience. Lisa Gibbie, Anya Poole, Katie Davidson and Bridget Bickley were not letting anything past, and newcomer Mia Herbert did some great passing up into midfield, away from the St Neots goal. The midfield stayed strong, and despite injury, still managed to feed balls into the forwards, who continued to find opportunities until the close of play. As the sun set and the whistle blew, St Neots were victorious with a 4-1 win. Captain Alex Colby congratulated her team and she couldn't have been any prouder. Her team who worked hard, supported each other and reeped their rewards. Bring on next week, the L4s are unbeaten this season and on a roll!! |
