Match Report

A dominant display of attacking speed and skill from Cambridge South Ladies 4s  under the floodlights at Long Road College in Cambridge finished in a 6-1 loss for St Neots Ladies 3s in East Division 4NW.

Cambridge South led the game from the start scoring first four minutes into the first half, quickly followed by a second in just under six minutes. By half time South were leading 4-0 with all the goals slotted in of the posts, frustratingly just out of reach of Saints keeper Steph Simpson. Cambridge South’s attackers were fast and skillful, experience showing through. Despite the score Simpson kept up a superb display of goalkeeping on the bouncy cold pitch, as the South forwards were relentless in their attack; the score could have been higher. Defenders Louise Abel and Katie Pye led the defence in the short corners with their sprints out to the South striker foiling some well-practiced routines from the home team.

But St Neots, with seven U18s in the team, kept battling against South with the game play end to end. None of the Saints team would leave the pitch without feeling they had played to their full ability and given it their all. POM Hannah Thompson led the Saints attack with some great displays of skill and hard work, lifting the ball over defensive sticks and sprinting after wide balls to work around the back. Rebounds shots from the South goalie were often picked up by Lucy Ruben and Aoife Stokes for another go. But, the visitors just couldn’t find the back of the goal and soon South scored another two half way through the second half taking their tally up to six.

Saints refused to give up with Georgina Bettsworth, Beth Jenkins and Katy Lloyd in midfield, speeding up their play, tackling and moving the ball up to Kirsty Clarke and Thompson for a last attack on the home defence. Thompson picked up the ball on the edge of the circle and her shot on goal, with height and speed, went in just shy of the far post, giving Saints a well-deserved consolation goal 10 minutes from the end, finishing the match at 6-1 to the home team.
