Womens 3 Vs Pelicans 2

A hard fought game for the Ladies 3s travelling without a regular goalkeeper, away at Kings Lynn against Pelicans 2s in East Division 4NW, resulting in a 4-2 defeat.

St Neots provided a strong attack against Pelicans and dominated the first 15 minutes of the game with a constant presence in the home team’s defensive 25 and shot after shot on the goalie from Hannah Thompson, Becky Roberts and Erin Hurst. However, the away team just couldn’t make that final shot across the line, despite a string of attacking short corners, and the play shifted back up field as Pelicans found their feet.

The home team scored first from a short corner, sneaking it past stand-in goalie Ros Lloyd and defender Julie Lewis on the right post. Ros then saved a high shot aimed at the top right of the goal with a reach with her stick, but by half time Pelicans had found the back of the net again going 2-0 up.

Midfielders Katy Lloyd and player of the match Ruby Lorigan battled against a more experienced Pelicans midfield and defence, with plenty of strong confident passing to move the ball back up field, supported by defenders Katie Pye and Andrea Pybus. A lovely cross into the home team D from Ruby found Hannah in front of the goal with a simple slot into the back of the net. Hannah followed it up with her second, courtesy of a well-worked run from deep midfield by Katy Lloyd.

The game was on at 2-2, with the play all over the pitch. However, with Saints trying out a new formation to push play out to the wings, a neglected centre occasionally made it difficult for sweeper Rosy Sabatino to find her players at free hits, which the Pelicans took advantage of. A third goal was quickly followed by a fourth as the Saints struggled to control the home team attack in the final 10 minutes, with the game finishing at 4-2 to the Pelicans.
