Match Report |
On another hot day St Neots took on a Bourne side that consisted of experience with a bit of youth. In the heat St Neots 14 players against Bourne's 11 would be a telling difference. The game started out cagily with a lot of play taking place in the middle of the pitch. St Neots attacked well using the young legs well. The attacks resulted in a number of short corners for St Neots that unfortunately couldn't be finished. Bourne had one strong attack that resulted in a shot being cleared off the line by Nigel Buckingham Jones. The half remained scoreless with a well-deserved drink required at the break. The second half started out in a similar way with a lot of play in midfield. The break came for St Neots when Andrew Thornhill-Brooks made a strong tackle just outside the St Neots D and came away with the ball. Some quick passing had the ball at the other end and a cross was put away from the off balance Mark Harrison. Going behind spurred Bourne on and they were soon level when a one of their midfield broke a few tackles and hit a hard shot into the bottom corner. The game started to open up and the extra players for St Neots and younger legs gave us more space against the tiring Bourne defence. A second goal was soon added for St Neots after a nice move up the right hand side and a clinical finish for young Andrew Pope with his first goal for a senior side. Bournes heads now began to drop and as more pressure was added more chances came and went for St Neots . Finally the pressure led to another short corner and Buckingham-Jones went up from centre back to hit a shot that was perhaps going wide till a deflection from a Bourne defender. The final score at 3-1 to St Neots was probably a fair result, with Man of the Match going to Andrew Thornhill-Brooks for his strong display in the centre of defence and tireless running in the heat.
