Match Report |
A good performance for the first game out this year. St Neots started out strongly against a Royston team made up of youth and experience. A lot of one touch hockey applied pressure to the Royston defence that remained strong with a number of fine saves from their keeper. St Neots had a number of short corners that were kept out by the defence. As the half moved on and legs tired the game became more equal with both teams having chances. St Neots unfortunately went one down just before half time after poor tracking back left a couple of Royston players unmarked allowing one to slot a goal into the bottom corner. The second half started in a similar manner to the first with St Neots putting together some good passing. Both teams had a number of short corners but both defences remained strong. The game then opened up more with both teams tiring. The Royston keeper made numerous saves as more and more shots finally made the target. He was finally beaten by Tim Woods coming in from left midfield to slot home a rebound. St Neots pressed for the last 5 minutes for a winner, but the game remained at 1 -1 which was probably a fair result. Man of the match goes to young Andrew Pope playing his first game for the 3's. Playing at right midfield he was strong going forward but tackled back well showing great promise for the season.
