Match Report | Saints bag first win with late goal. St Neots Men’s 1st team faced Long Sutton 2s in their first home game of the season. Coming off the back of two heavy defeats the young Saints side new that this game was a real opportunity to get some much needed points on the board. The first half was a back and forth affair with both teams pushing for an early goal, but despite this the half finished 0-0. The second half began with some solid Saints defending and Sutton looked to press after the break. Ben Knight in goal put in an outstanding performance to keep the scores level. Then, with a nasty injury to defender Deon Hayden weakened the Saints back line and despite heroic defending from Joe Thomas and Rhys Edwards, Long Sutton set up a three on two and produced a brilliant finish to beat Knight between the posts. Saints didn’t let this dampen their spirits and energy and soon equalised with a superb individual strike from Sam (insert surname I can’t remember!). Saints continued to push and the game opened up and both sides had chances, but it was Saints who won a short corner right at the final whistle. Win the game over and just the corner to play up stepped Captain Brad Forsdick to seal the game with a deft touch into the back of the Sutton net. Saints have their first three points on the board and progress to their next game with their confidence sky high. |
