Match Report | Saints Team: Ladies 4s Opposition: Wisbech 3s Score (SNHC first): 1-2 Venue: Longsands Academy Date and PB time: 24th October 2020 at 10am Weather: Surprisingly not too bad Spirit: Good
First half report After divided murmurings in the pre-match talk about the formation of today’s game, the 4s started on a good footing. They welcomed back Claire Cooper, Sophie Gurnell and Louise Abell as several other 4s were away. The Saints took the 1st half in their stride, settling into a steady rhythm. Some good defensive play and hard work in midfield produced several chances up front, including a cracking run by Chris Deeks, all on her tod. Jay Dickinson looked dangerous in the D on many occasions, and some good links between Sophie Gurnell and the other forwards created a number of chances for the Saints. However, it was not until nearing the end of the 1st half that the Saints were lucky, courtesy of a couple of short corners conceded by Wisbech. Although nothing was to come of the first, the second was to prove far more fruitful. Captain, Alex Colby, injected confidently to Becky Roberts, who slipped it along the forward line to Callie Wicks, who promptly placed the ball firmly in the back of the net. The first half ended, and the Saints were in the lead… Score: 1-0
Second half report Unfortunately, the second half was not the same kettle of fish as the first, and the Saints came undone. The 4s worked hard but Wisbech worked harder and proved the stronger side in this half. One goal equalised and it was not long before a second goal for Wisbech put them firmly in the lead. Try as they might, Saints just could not level the playing field. Ali Stubbs, Anya Poole and Louise Abell continued to provide defensive blocks. Meanwhile Claire Cooper, Claire Piper and Ali McMurray created more chances for the forwards, moving the ball skilfully through midfield. There were a number of short corner opportunities for the Saints, but they just could not find the back of the net. The final whistle blew, and the Saints felt robbed. Final score: 1-2
Best goal for Saints: It was the only one but a beautifully constructed short corner, demonstrating great communication between the forward line, finished expertly by Callie Wicks. Best save for Saints: Not one stands out specifically but Steph Simpson was seen performing several acrobatic tricks throughout the match. Anything else: It should have been theirs but it just wasn’t to be for the Saints today. Where is the team placed now in the league? They have dropped a little and need to pick up pace next week to improve on 5th place. |
