Match Report | Sudbury at Home 18 January 2020 St Neots Ladies 1s entertained the unbeaten league leaders, Sudbury L1s. Coming off the back of a disappointing performance and result last week we knew that this fixture was always going to be a tough one. Saints opted for a bit more of a cautious approach and played five in midfield. The game started at a frantic pace with both teams going close in the early stages of the game. But unfortunately it was the away team that broke the deadlock with a fast break-away goal against the run of play. The girls’ heads did not drop as they continued to pile on the pressure and create a number of great opportunities to equalise. With only a few minutes left in the half, Sudbury’s centre forward found herself unmarked in the D and fired home the second goal to put the visitors two up at halftime. The score line didn’t really reflect the first half and the ladies knew everything was still to play for. With a couple of tweaks in the formation, Saints started the second half on the front foot and had Sudbury pinned in their own third. Eventually, all the home team’s pressure paid off with another fantastic strike from Eleanor Pybus ( her 10th of the season) from a well-worked short corner: 2-1 and game on! Momentum was now fully with the home team, with chances being created every few minutes. But Saints players pushing forwards, looking for a deserved equaliser, left them stretched at the back. This allowed Sudbury to capitalise on extra space and score another two quickfire goals to put the game beyond reach. Despite losing the game the ladies should be extremely proud of this performance, possibly the best of the season. The score line flattered the away team and didn’t reflect the hard work and effort the team put in. Player of the match was shared between Sophie Faulkner and Eleanor, who both had fantastic game |
