Match Report |
St Neots Ladies 1s continued their rise up the table with another fantastic performance, winning away at Wisbech on a sunny Saturday afternoon. The game was played on Astroturf that was covered in mud and wet leaves, making it virtually unusable, as was shown by our dynamic midfielder Sophie Faulkner, whose commitment in defence and attack saw her completely wipe out twice on the slippery surface. New astros, please!Saints started at great pace, creating several scoring opportunities. This early pressure was soon rewarded with a smart finish from striker Caz Osborn, who played an almost perfect match. Her reverse-struck rocket from the top of the D put Saints one up. Soon afterwards, Saints were celebrating again after Kirsty Mckenzie fired us into a comfortable 2–0 lead going into the half-time break with a cool finish in a crowded D. In fact, being only two goals in front was a bit of a disappointment as the away team had created several chances from openplay. The home team pulled one back early on in the second half with a scrappy finish from a short corner. But the points were never in doubt as a dominant Saints went on to find the back of the net twice more with our very own in-formFox in the Box, Sue Glover, who hit a brace for the second week running.Unfortunately, Saints conceded another goal (a carbon copy of the first) late on, but it did little to dampen the spirt of the fantastic Ladies 1s. Wisbech played hard to the end, but they disappointed their supporters, who grew in number as the match went on and earnt their captain a green card with some unsporting comments from a crowded sideline. There were eight players in contention for player of the match, such was the excellent teamwork, skill and hunger on display throughout the afternoon, but it went to a deserving Millie Payne, for yet another tireless performance in Midfield.
