Match Report |
A tough afternoon for the U12 girls at the Cambridgeshire County tournament - and not just because of the cold wind. Our strongest U12 squad couldn't quite match the might of the dominant Cambridge City club, who fielded four teams out of the seven in the tournament, and took four out of the five top spots. The St Neots team played three of the four City teams, losing 0-1, 0-3 and 0-2, but won against local rivals St Ives 2-1 with goals coming from Aoife Stokes and Ruby Lane.
St Neots had plenty of opportunity with the final scorelines rarely indicative of the matchplay. However, the girls need to be more aggressive on the pitch, become more confident on the ball and find a way around strong defenders and goalies. Most of the games saw St Neots registering more shots on goal than their opponents, with Aoife, Ruby, Katy Lloyd, Ruby Lorigan, Elizabeth Russel and Eleanor Masters all having a go in most of the matches. In the final match, against Cambridge City yellows, St Neots managed seven attacking short corners in a row, but failed to convert. Special mention to some fine defensive tackling from Katie Pye, a confident outing for defender Emilia Healey in only her second tournament for the club and some superb saves from the always consistent Martha Lorigan in goal.
A learning experience for all, with hard, fast games on a very different astro pitch to the ones they are used to at Longsands, Kimbolton and Hinchingbrooke. Well done girls - you know what you need to do.
