Match Report

A good start by the U12 girls against Newmarket Bs, at the Saffron Walden friendly tournament, with a 2-0 win. Katy Lloyd and Ruby Lorigan came close with shots on goal several times, saved by a great goalie. Katie Pye and Charlotte Simmons provided a solid defence, rarely letting the ball through to goalie Annabel Cox. Ruby finally converted the first goal, with a hard hit, which deflected off a defenders stick and into the top of the goal. This was quickly followed up by a cross from Katy which Rosie Cox, who had just subbed on and was standing on the back post, slipped in behind the goalie.

Rosie was on a roll and provided several close calls in the second match again St Ives, who were fielding a couple of St Neots players - Louise Abel and Charlotte - due to being short of numbers. Elizabeth Russel, Katy, Ruby, Mollly Cox, Bella Moretto and Emilia Heley all had shots on goal, which were either saved by the goalie or went wide. The St Neots parents watching were kept on their toes and provided plenty of vocal support. Finally Katy smashed a shot from the edge of the D, hitting the backboard so hard it rebounded back into play! Elizabeth followed up with a second goal soon after. Another 2-0 win.

St Ives also benefited from Annabel, Rosie and Molly Cox and Elizabeth and Emilia providing cover in their other games, allowing all the St Neots squad to get plenty of play.

Newmarket As proved harder work for St Neots, with end to end play but no goals, finishing 0-0. Katy worked hard throughout the whole tournament in attacking midfield, gathering the ball and surging forward to support Elizabeth, Rosie and Emilia. Ruby supported well, making solid tackles and working with Eleanor Masters, who continues to improve on the wing making several solo spirited runs from defence through to forward, and picking up passes from Ruby and Katy. The defensive team of Katie, Charlotte, Ishita Rajesh and Louise Abel made tackle after tackle, with goalie Annabel clearing anything that managed to get through. Katie Pye's defensive tackling and clearing improves each week, with some lovely hard balls up the pitch towards Katy, Ruby and Emilia. Bella made some great runs and goal shots until she was carried off injured after a hard ball hit her ankle.

And finally two games versus Saffron Walden, who fielded some excellent players who shot hard at goal. St Neots defense had plenty of short corner practice with Ruby and Katy running out to make the first tackles, leaving Katie, Charlotte and Annabel to defend the goal. However, in game play a few defensive mistakes crept in; the girls need to work on confidently clearing the ball hard, and avoiding getting trapped passing into the busy middle of the pitch. Despite plenty of attacking play at the other end St Neots just could not find the back of the net in the same way as they hard earlier in the morning. St Neots went down 0-1 in the first game and 0-2 in the second, with all the players flagging at the end after a hard mornings play.

A great tournament with hard work from everyone. Rosie Cox deservedly won 'player of the match' with a spirited performance as a forward, goal hanging and running around creating spaces.
