Match Report

Congratulations to the mixed St Neots team who won the U12 Bedford HC tournament.
Team 1 - Harry Pybus, Ruby Lane, Jake French, Katy Lloyd, Andrew Pope, Aoife Stokes, Freddie Spavins and keeper Martha Lorigan - started slowly with a 0-0 draw against Leighton Buzzard 2s, with all the pressure but just couldn't find the back of the net due to some outstanding goalkeeping from the Leighton keeper. The one goal from Ruby Lane was disallowed due to it being an aerial shot. St Neots then beat Bedford 1s 1-0 with a goal from Harry, a superb performance all-round by the youngest Pybus, who picked up and distributed the ball to his team-mates whilst running rings around his opponents. Aoife also had a goal disallowed, again a fantastic aerial shot, but unfortunately against tournament rules. The team then won 2-1 against Luton with goals from Aoife and Harry and then a 2-0 win against Cambridge 2s, following some superb passing, and great team-work between forwards Aoife and Ruby in the circle, with both girls scoring goals. The team won their pool with 10 points and went into the semi-final agains Bedford 3s, with a 2-0 win, with the first goal from Ruby working hard in the circle, and some great movement through midfield by Andrew to set Ruby up for her second of the game. The final was against Shefford and Sandy 1, a great team who had easily won their pool and kept St Neots working hard with solid tackling. However, player of the tournament and top goal scorer Ruby came through and took the plaudits with a final goal to seal the tournament win.

St Neots was also represented at the tournament by Team 2 - Katie Pye, Sam Crabtree, Eleanor Masters, Daniel Orton, Bella Morretto, James Neuhauser, Haithem Al-Ali and Martha Lorigan (doubling up as keeper on both teams) plus a star turn from Bedford keeper Phoebe in one match. The team lost 1-0 against Bedford 2, drew 0-0 against Leighton Buzzard 2s and Cambridge 1s and lost 2-0 against eventual finalists Shefford and Sandy 1s. A great team performance across the pitch as St Neots worked so hard to score and just couldn't find the back of the net. At no point through the tournament did the team seem overwhelmed and they should be pleased with their individual performances. Katie, in defence, made tackle after tackle, with some great solid clear-outs to the mid-fielders. Haithem worked hard in midfield, pushing the balll out to Bella up front and making many shots on goal himself. Both Katie and Haithem deservedly won players of the tournament for their hockey. Goalie Martha had her best game versus Cambridge, saving and clearing multiple shots on goal.
