Match Report |
A swathe of green and yellow cards did nothing to assist the eleven man squad of St Neots 3s in their away game against high-scoring and highly-positioned Wellingborough 1s with their fifteen-man, well-drilled team. The first 5 minutes or so looked as if Saints might be able to put some pressure into their attack but Wellingborough also got into their usual stride. If only the away side could have kept some composure to match their determination and effort! Surprisingly, Olly Colbert received a rare yellow for "deliberate" back stick play and the home side were three up by half time capitalising on their stong attacking play and attempting to shoot at every opportunity, including clever reverse-stick shots. Despite their efforts and Vince Furey's tactical suggestions Saints continued to find it difficult to keep the home side at bay, even though goalie Poole was again in fine form. Antagonising umpires with constant questioning of decisions is never a good idea and captain Geoff Watts had to receive a lecture about his side's verbal misdemeanours! Yellow cards followed for Fin Hay for a strong stick tackle and Mike Hornby for dissent. Two more goals in the second half completed the scoring but Nigel Buckingham-Jones in defence was a worthy man of the match for the away side.
