Match Report | After last week`s excellent victory at Ipswich it was disappointing that Saints took a little while to settle against a strong, experienced, Bedford 2s side who had their promotion confirmed the previous Saturday. Gradually Saints gained a foothold in the game and began to threaten, with Kelly Bingham firing narrowly wide from their best opportunity. Just as it looked as if it would be all-square at the break Bedford converted their second penalty corner of the half with an excellent deflection which glanced high in to the net off Tanya Sargeant`s face mask! Saints responded well and were first out of the blocks in the second half, equalising through Tanya Sargeant, also from a penalty corner. Bedford reasserted themselves but, despite a period of pressure, they couldn`t find their way past player of the match Mel Harding enjoying a fine game in the Saints goal and giving her new kickers and leg guards a comprehensive workout! As the game drew to a close, both Caroline Osborne and Eleanor Pybus nearly seized a late victory for Saints. So a well-earned point for Saints from a determined, hard-working and spirited display by the whole squad. The important point lifts Saints one place higher in the league standings, but still leaves them requiring points to secure their status for next season - in what is a particularly tight and competitive league! Next weekend Saints have a trip to the seaside to face a Lowestoft side who are currently just one point and one place ahead of Saints in the league standings. |
