The game started at a brisk pace, with both sides looking threatening in attack. Annie Cerveno had already gone close for Saints, but shortly afterwards they took the lead with Caroline Osborne expertly converting at a penalty corner. Unfortunately Chloe Pinn, making her 1st X1 debut and just settling in to the game, was injured by a deflected ball from close range. Mel Harding in the Saints goal saved well at an Ipswich penalty corner, but as the half drew to a conclusion Saints began to get on top, without managing to extend their lead.

It was a really assured second half display by Saints who increasingly dominated the game, whilst struggling to convert opportunities to increase their lead - with the Ipswich `keeper, despite an injury, bravely keeping them at bay. It looked as though Caroline Osborne had doubled Saints advantage, but her excellent effort “pinged” back in to play off the home crossbar. Finally Saints pressure paid off with a penalty stroke awarded when a goal bound shot was stopped by a defenders foot near the goal line and Tanya Sargeant efficiently converted.

So an important, well-earned victory for Saints from an excellent all-round team performance. Recognition for several players in the player of the match vote, but the plaudits went to Charlie Churms for her energetic, positive attacking play. Particular thanks from the squad to Chloe for stepping up at short notice and our very best wishes to her for a speedy recovery.    

This victory lifts Saints just above the two Division 1 relegation places, but in a very even and competitive league Saints still have plenty of work to do in their 4 remaining league games, starting with a local derby against Bedford IIs at home (1pm at Longsands) next Saturday.
