Match Report | It was a tough test of Saints recent good form when they faced a strong Cambridge University side at Longsands this Saturday. Saints made a promising start, in a fairly even opening, but disappointingly they fell behind to a deflected goal mid-way through the first half. Kaz Osborne then came close for Saints, but her strong shot was well saved by the students `keeper. The visitors extended their lead with a well-executed drag-flick at a penalty corner and a further open play goal, shortly before the interval. The half-time score-line was harsh on Saints - but they responded well, dominating the early exchanges of the second period. They won a series of penalty corners, but despite going close they weren`t able to convert. A spirited Saints side continued to push forward, looking for the goal to bring them back in to contention. As the game became stretched, the students continued to threaten, but Saints bravely and determinedly defended their penalty corner awards - with Amy Harley, saving well on a number of occasions. Surprisingly the match ended with neither side registering in the second half. Player of the match for Saints was Lotti Knights - for her pacey and energetic display, as she continues her welcome return from injury. Whilst Saints were disappointed not to have capitalised on some of the opportunities they created, they can be pleased with their overall display against a strong University side heading for promotion back to the East premier league. Saints will look to take the many positive aspects of this game in to next Saturday`s rescheduled away game against Norwich Dragons. |
