Match Report

Saints made an excellent start to their post-Christmas league season, defeating Cambridge City III in an exciting game at Longsands. Saints started the game well, but couldn`t make the breakthrough and fell behind to a deflected goal from the visitors first penalty corner. Undaunted, Saints continued to retain possession well, attacking in numbers and calling the City `keeper in to action from both open play and penalty corners. Just when it seemed their first half efforts would go unrewarded, Tanya Sargeant carried the ball forward aggressively and found Kirsty McKenzie free in the circle, for a well taken equaliser.

A flurry of 4 goals then followed, early in the second half. Eleanor Pybus gave Saints the lead with a well-executed penalty corner move.  Their lead was extended following an excellent finish by Kelly Bingham and then Kirsty Mckenzie scored her second goal of the game, opportunistically seizing on a rebound from the `keepers pads and forcing home from close range, to make it 4-1 to Saints! Cambridge hit back quickly, to keep themselves in the game - again from a penalty corner. A few minutes of pressure from the visitors followed, but then Saints reasserted themselves with Kaz Osborne and Annie Cerveno coming close to extending Saints lead. There was no further addition to the score, with Saints registering a 4-2 victory, a very positive and encouraging performance from the whole Saints squad.

Next week Saints will aim to continue to build on their recent good form and performances when they travel to Norwich to face the Dragons.
