Match Report

Saints started the game well, enjoying the greater share of possession. Sudbury, however, looked dangerous when they launched fast, direct counter-attacks. Annie Cerveno had come close for Saints, when her strong shot at a penalty corner was saved well - but Saints fell behind shortly before half-time when they failed to clear at a Sudbury penalty corner, the home side capitalising at the break-down.

Sudbury enjoyed a period of pressure at the beginning of the second half and extended their lead as Saints struggled to retain possession and clear their lines effectively. Saints responded well to this setback and finished the game strongly, attacking with much more urgency and purpose. Player of the match Eleanor Pybus drove the side forward and Katie Bates made some excellent runs - but unfortunately Saints weren`t able to capitalise on opportunities created either on the Sudbury baseline, or from a couple of penalty corner awards.

Overall, it was a promising display from Saints in a fairly even game. If they could have shown the intensity and purpose of the final third, throughout the game, they may well have taken points from the match. Next Saturday is the final game before the Xmas break when Saints will be looking to build on this performance and gain some reward, when they make the shorter trip to Cambridge to face Cambridge University II.
