Match Report

This was a tough away match for Saints against the Cambridge University 1st team, who had been relegated from the premier league the previous season.  Saints started well, dominating the opening exchanges, but disappointingly the students took the lead from their first meaningful attack. The University increased their lead, shortly before half-time, with a second open play goal. Saints had shown enough in the first half to offer encouragement that they could trouble the students - if they could score the next goal.

Unfortunately, another swift Cambridge break resulted in a decisive third goal. As Saints tired, the home team added two late penalty corner goals. Mel Harding had enjoyed a good, busy, game in the Saints goal - but player of the match honours deservedly went to Tanya Sargeant for an excellent, composed display at the heart of the Saints defence.

Next week Saints will be looking to build on a number of encouraging aspects of this performance against a strong University side, when they entertain Ipswich II, 1pm at Longsands.
