Match Report

After a couple of promising performances, but narrow defeats, it was important for Saints to get their season fully up and running. This week they faced the tough challenge of a free-scoring Norwich Dragons side that had been playing Premier league hockey last season.

Norwich soon showed their quality, retaining possession well and carrying the ball forward skilfully and aggressively. Saints, however, defended with great spirit and determination, exemplified by Tanya Sargeant, restricting the visitors opportunities. When they did enter the home circle Norwich found Saints goalkeeper and player of the match Mel Harding in outstanding form.

Indeed Saints energetic forward line, with Caroline Osborne settling in well into the side and enjoying her best game to date, induced errors from the Norwich defence and they threatened as they broke forward with pace. The second half followed a similar pattern to the first with ultimately neither side quite capable of making the breakthrough.

A good point then for Saints, against a strong Norwich side - reward for an excellent, spirited display from the whole squad. Another tough game for Saints next weekend as they look to bulid on this performance - they travel to face Dereham, who have made a 100% start to the season.
