Match Report

Saints were edged out in a five goal thriller against local rivals Cambridge City III. After a slow start last weekend, Saints were fast out of their blocks - penning the home side in their own 25. There were opportunities from both open play and penalty corners, but the home `keeper was in top form, foiling the Saints attack on many occasions.

From their first serious attack City broke quickly and finished well to take the lead. This was doubled within a couple of minutes when Saints conceded possession and again the home side seized on their opportunity. Saints responded and Kelly Bingham gave them encouragement for the second half, finishing off a surging run.

Within 5 minutes of the restart Saints were level when Georgia Grant expertly finished off a terrific flowing move additionally involving youngsters Lotti Knights and Charlie Churms. As the game moved in to the final quarter the home side gradually enjoyed more possession and they claimed a winner with a good reverse stick finish as Saints failed to clear their lines.

Player of the match was well contested, but the honours went to Charlie Churms for her energetic and influential midfield display. The result was harsh on Saints who had produced some terrific attacking play, but hadn’t fully capitalised on the opportunities they had created. Lots of positives, however, as Saints prepare to entertain Norwich Dragons at Longsands (1pm) next Saturday.
