Match Report

A disappointing start to the new East 1N league season for St Neots, with a narrow home defeat to Cambridge University II. Saints welcomed back Katie Bates and Caroline Osborne to their side after differing periods away from the Club. Additionally congratulations to Charlie Churms who is the latest graduate from the Club`s very successful youth academy to step up to the 1st X1 squad.

The students made the better start and led through an excellent early reverse stick penalty corner strike. Saints gradually settled and equalised when Kirsty McKenzie applied a strong finish at a penalty corner breakdown. Saints were now looking the more threatening side, but shortly before the break they conceded possession and the Cambridge forward finished well to give the visitors a narrow half-time lead.

Saints dominated possession in the second half, Kate Clark was denied by the post, Saints couldn’t capitalise on several penalty corner opportunities and from open play they additionally found the visiting `keeper in top form - most notably from an excellent strike from the edge of the circle by Eleanor Pybus. So a narrow 1-2 defeat - Saints were unfortunate not to take any points from the game, but there were plenty of encouraging aspects to build on as Saints prepare to face another local side – Cambridge City III away next Saturday. Player of the match for Saints was Kelly Bingham for her excellent energetic and determined midfield display.
