Match Report | It was third time lucky as this rescheduled match finally took place, following two postponements due to frost. It was the return fixture from the opening day of the season when Saints had drawn 1-1 at Watton, back in September, in their first Division 1 (North) game. The visitors started the game the better but Liana Griffiths, deputising in the Saints goal, saved well to keep Watton at bay. As Saints settled they began to threaten, attacking at pace and with numbers. Indeed they took the lead through another good finish from the prolific Georgia Grant. The lead was doubled shortly afterwards by a strong penalty corner strike by Eleanor Pybus. Too frequently, however, Saints conceded possession and the visitors threatened with aggressive breaks. From one of these Watton pulled a goal back, shortly before the interval, keeping them very much in contention. The next goal was likely to be crucial and as Saints began to dominate possession the goal duly arrived at a penalty corner break-down, Georgia Grant, again, applying a clinical close-range finish. Highlights in an efficient, rather than spectacular, Saints display included a confident debut from Millie Payne and an excellent player of the match performance by fellow-youngster Charlie Churms. Next week Saints make the short trip to Bedford to face a tough game against promotion-chasing Bedford 2s. |
