Match Report |
It was tempting fate to have more than eleven players for only the third time this season and we were soon down to eleven when Mark Harrison suffered a pulled calf muscle minutes into a re-arranged fixture that only just just went ahead given recent freezing conditions. It is impossible to select a man of the match given the all-round team performance which earned Saints their first win of the season. The defence was as solid as ever refusing to allow Peterborough any clear-cut chances and allowing Tim Poole in goal little opportunity to show his usual busy display. Young legs in the guise of Josh Gardner and Jack Percival also made a noticeable difference to the home side's ability to confront players and be more aggressive in attack., although it was old-timers Adam Gardner who scored from open play in the first half and captain Geoff Watts slotting home after a short corner save from CoP goalie. Duncan Talbot continued to control midfield in the second half and Saints continued to attack, particularly with right back Ian Clarke hiting the ball up the line for younger legs to put pressure on the CoP gaol. The third goal again from open play which this time started on the right was ably scored by Jack Percival. Perhaps in January, absences, colds, man-flu and muscle pulls will be a thing of the past.
