Match Report |
The Over 50 were facing yet another Ipswich side so after the sound thrashing received in the last game it was with some trepidation that the side made the trek down the A14 to the East Coast. Initial fears were realised when Ipswich & East Suffolk proceded to play the game in the Saints 23m and made several chances with short corners aplenty! Solid and resilient defending saw out this onslaught and Saints turned on the passing flowing game switch much to the oppositions suprise and consternation! The ball started to move fluidly between saints sticks with Duncan and Chris dominating the midfield and distributing intelligently left and right while Paul and Adam confused the Ipswich defence with darting , jinking runs. Saints were rewarded with a couple of short corners and some open play chances but nothing struck home. JP's half time team talk asked the team for more of the same and they delivered. Anthony was dogged in disrupting Ipswich moves on the right and also made some half chances but the breakthrough came when Chris Smith quickly restarted from the half way line and through Phil , Duncan and Chris Riley got the ball to Paul on the far left who struck the ball accross the goal to meet Adam's perfectly timed run! A deserved 1-0 lead with 20 minutes to go. Saints continued to press and won a couple more short corners but with no outcome. Ipswich began fighting back hard and pushed all forward for the equaliser ; the last 5 saw them win 4 short corners with Tim and Simon seeing off 3 of them. Ipswich's last chance came from the fourth where with Simon on the floor and the ball rolling free Chris stretched over Simon to push the ball away to safety. Much relief all round when the final whistle blew but a well deserved win with much good hockey played.
