Match Report | Following an encouraging performance, but disappointing score-line, last weekend it was important for Saints to pick up points from their trip to face the students of the University of East Anglia. UEA, similarly to Saints, were promoted to League 1N as regional Division 2 league champions (2NE) last season. Saints started the game positively with good patterns of play, but weren’t able to move the ball quickly or accurately enough, as they got used to the bouncy pitch, to create clear goal-scoring opportunities. The students gained confidence and came in to the game, but weren’t able to capitalise on a barrage of penalty corners defended well by goalkeeper Mel Harding and the Saints back-line. Shortly before half-time Saints made the break-through. Following a good move Paula Bingham linked with Georgia Grant who created the angle to slide the ball past the home `keeper. Saints made the ideal start to the second half when Captain Emma Ritchie converted their first penalty corner. Saints then produced their best hockey of the game as they increased their lead through further goals from Georgia Grant with a penalty corner strike and Paula Bingham converting a good move from close range. Georgia Grant took the player of the match plaudits for her energetic display and excellent brace of goals. Saints had to work hard for victory, but can be pleased with the result and particularly their second half performance. The result sets them up well for the exciting prospect of a home derby match against local rivals St Ives, 1pm at Longsands next Saturday. |
