Match Report

In their first home Division 1 league game Saints faced a tough encounter with Norwich City, who had been relegated from the East premier league last season. Saints started the game at a terrific pace, pushing the visitors back, but weren’t able to capitalise on a couple of early penalty corner awards. As the visitors gained a foothold, they took the lead with a well worked goal. Saints, however, responded well with Paula Bingham applying the finish following a good Saints move. As the half wore on Norwich had a period of pressure which saw them re-take the lead and then extend it with an excellent penalty corner goal.

Saints started the second half well, again pushing the visitors back, but they weren`t able to find the goal to bring them back in to contention. In their first breakaway of the half Norwich extended their lead and subsequently added 2 further goals - one another well worked penalty corner goal. The 1-6 scoreline was very harsh on Saints who had produced some excellent hockey and matched a strong Norwich side for good periods of the game. The visitors were, however, clinical in exploiting turnovers in possession and in the execution of their penalty corner routine.

Next week Saints again face a Norwich side, this time traveling to face the students of the University of East Anglia. They will look to take the many positive aspects of this display as well as some key learnings forward in to this game.
