Match Report

It was a journey to Norfolk for Saints to face Watton in their opening league (Division 1 North) match of the season, following last seasons promotion as Champions of Division 2NW. Watton were also new to the league, having been promoted as runners up of Division 2NE. Both sides started the game with the expected energy and enthusiasm. In the initial exchanges Saints moved the ball well on a slow, sandy pitch and Watton drove aggressively at the heart of the Saints defence. With just 6 minutes on the clock Saints broke forward with pace and Kelly Bingham fired an unstoppable shot past the home goalkeeper. Unfortunately Saints lead was only short-lived, Watton responding well and as the ball came across the Saints D it was tapped home at the far post for the equaliser. Watton then enjoyed a good period of play, but weren’t able to capitalise - particularly with Mel Harding producing some good saves in the Saints goal.

Saints retained possession much better in the second half and as the game opened up they created opportunities with the speed and pace of their attacks. Both Captain Emma Ritchie and Annie Cerveno were thwarted in 1v1 situations by good saves from the Watton `keeper. Watton also continued to threaten, mainly from penalty corners - won through the speed and directness of their attacking play. Spirited and determined defence – with both Mandy Rogers and Eleanor Pybus making goal-line clearances, ensured Watton couldn’t add to their first half score and the match ended honours even, 1-1.

Player of the match was well contested, but the award went to youngster Eleanor Pybus in her first league game for the Saints 1st team for an assured display and particularly for the goal-saving last-ditch clearance! The result might have gone either way but Saints returned home satisfied with a hard-earned point from their first game at this level. Saints are now looking forward to what will be a tough first home Division 1 match next Saturday - when they face Norwich City who were relegated from the East Premier division last season - 1pm at Longsands Academy.
