Match Report

It was the final game of pre-season preparation for the Saints ladies 1s when they faced Bishops Stortford, in a clash between last seasons Division 2 Champions (Saints: 2NW, Stortford: 2SW), at home on Saturday. Stortford were generally in the ascendency in the first half, at a rain-soaked Longsands - but solid defence, particularly at penalty corners and also with Mel Harding enjoying an excellent debut in the Saints goal, Stortford were denied any breakthrough. When Saints broke forward with pace they began to create opportunities, although the game remained score-less at the break.

Indeed Saints grew stronger throughout the second period and nearly claimed victory in the final minutes as Georgia Grant was denied at close range. A particularly pleasing aspect of this game and pre-season is how youngster Eleanor Pybus and new players Mel Harding, Kirsty McKenzie and Jess Homan have settled in to the squad. Ultimately a fast, close, well contested game ended with honours even, but proved ideal preparation before Saints first game in Division 1 (North) when they travel to Norfolk to face Watton next Saturday.
